The Q grader certification program was launched in 2003 by The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). This is a very thorough examination and training course to become a certified coffee grader by evaluating the physical and sensory attributes of a coffee.
Cupping protocols around the globe have become much more standardized since the Q grader certification had been implemented. The CQI recognizes two different grading certifications: Q graders for Arabica beans and R graders for Robusta beans.
Many fail their first attempts to pass. Once certified one needs to refresh the course after two years.
