We are starting our Rwandan season with an impressive coffee from the Northern Region. The Gakenke District is known for producing top Specialty Coffee in Rwanda. Many Cup of Excellence winners are based in Gakenke. Rwanda is the land of 1000 hills and it has perfect coffee growing conditions. Our fully washed Bourbon lot has tons of origin flavours of clementine, marzipan, nougat and dark cherries. The body is rich with a syrupy and creamy mouthfeel.
Bumbogo is a very young washing station and has been growing since it started in 2017. The Bumbogo family more than doubled its production from the first year by building an extra 106 new African drying beds, bringing the grand total to 203 drying beds. More so, through the close partnership they have provided agricultural education and seedlings to the Bumbogo Farmers generating higher yields and incomes. They have supplied roof sheeting to the Bumbogo communities in order for them to build safer structured roofs to withstand heavy rain falls.
In Rwanda, coffee producers can choose which washing station they want to work with. Bumbogo Washing Station is not only committed to training the farmers and thus to better coffee prices, but also prepares the coffee in a very special way. In a first step the cherries are weighed, the pulp is peeled and they ferment for 12 hours in large tanks. Afterwards, five songs are danced in front of the coffees - the perfect length to remove the sugar layer on the beans. This special method of preparation is called Ikinimba. The beans are then sorted and dried for 25 days on African Beds.
